Hochkirch Winery wins the Inaugural Australia/New Zealand Organic Wine Show
The inaugural Australia/New Zealand Organic Wine Show was launched at Australia’s premier Organic Expo on the 29 – 31 July at the Sydney Convention Centre, Darling Harbour, to nearly 6000 attendees.
The Australia/New Zealand Organic Wine Show was kindly sponsored by Palm Beach Wine Co., Ultimo Wine Centre, Organic Crop Protectants and The Department of State & Regional Development. It attracted 96 entries across a diverse range of varieties, from 28 organic and biodynamic vineyards located in different regions throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Hochkirch Winery from the Henty Region in Western Victoria won the beautifully carved Gil Wahlquist Trophy, for their 2003 Riesling. The winners, John and Jennifer Nagorcka were delighted with the result saying, “It was pleasing to see a strong line up of biodynamic and organic wines and particularly satisfying that the judges made no allowances simply because the wines were organic.”
Gil Wahlquist, whom the trophy is named after, planted the first organic vines in Australia in 1971 which later became the first certified organic vineyard in 1984. Gil, now retired from the industry, attended the Organic Cocktail Party to present and accept the trophy on behalf of Hochkirch Winery.
The Australia/New Zealand Organic Wine Show is dedicated to the judging and promotion of certified organic and biodynamic wines. It showcases the diversity, regionality, originality and quality that is now available and aims to give organic wine greater recognition with wine lovers.
The Australia/New Zealand Organic Wine Show will be an annual event, held in conjunction with the Organic Expo, in order for wine connoisseurs to gain an appreciation of organic wines, through tasting and speaking directly with the vineyards exhibiting at the Expo.
