  • 2:30pm - 3:30pm The Future of Organics In The Oceania Pacific Region

    Presented by: Professor Stuart Hill, founding editor of the Journal of Organic Systems

    3 young and successful business people from 3 very different regions of Oceania Pacific discuss the organic sector, its relationship with their businesses and the community and their vision for the future. An interesting, lively and forward thinking panel discussion which will also highlight how the organic community operates in different countries.

    Panel comprises:

    Antonio Ramos - Australia: Wholesaler & manufacturer of his own organic food brand Olive Green Organics, Antonio set up partnerships with farming groups and food processors from the Andes Region in South America to bring to Australia products with value added at the source, a form of trading fairly. Born in Chile and raised in Cuba, Antonio has lived in Australia for the past 15 years where he has studied Environmental Science. Understanding both Australian consumers and the producers in developing countries has enabled him to create products that cater for everyone's needs.

    Mere Tokako - New Zealand: Mere is a founding Board Member of national Maori organics authority, Te Waka Kai Ora. She is currently Managing Editor of Koha Magazine. She hopes to bring together commercial Maori entities with the NGO community to pursue opportunities to promote Native Trade.

    Karen Mapusua - Samoa: Karen has 12 years living and working with communities and producers in the Pacific. Since 2004 she has served as Associate Director for Women In Business Development in Samoa and is actively involved in the organic certification and fair-trade efforts. Karen is also serving as the Secretary of the Pacific Organic and Ethical Trade Community (POETCom), the governance body for organics and ethical trade network in the Pacific Islands.

    Presented by: Catriona Macmillan, Organic Traders & Consumers Network

    A matter of fact look at the standards from the inside-out and outside-in. A series of short presentations followed by a panel discussion and open questions from the audience.
